Two African American History classes went to the Museum of American Revolution for a special exhibit called “Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia.” We learned about the Forten family, a prominent free African American family in 19th century Philadelphia. The exhibit also featured information about James Forten, who was born a free person of African descent, and showcased how he became a successful businessperson, philanthropist, and abolitionist.
