This past summer four of our scholars, L to R: Ronnie Dukes, Nojhat Miah, Chloe
Kodua, and Tamia Tertulien, were selected as Ambassadors for the Independence
Seaport Museum. This was a paid internship where they received training in community-
based leadership, research, and museum education. After the training period, the
ambassadors worked in teams to teach two lessons a week for the public, in the museum’s
interactive Learning Lab. Ambassadors were encouraged to pick lessons that they find
the most interesting and add their own spin to those lessons. Additionally, they worked on
a number of projects utilizing the museum collections, boat shop, and the Delaware
River.
The program utilizes a humanities-driven STEM model, which encourages a holistic
understanding of the history and science of the Delaware River. The program puts equal
emphasis on academic, professional, trade, and 21st century life skills. At the end of the
program, the students had a chance to share what they learned to an audience of city-
leaders, professionals, and their families.
