What a great trip to the Philadelphia Film Society, hosting our 9th graders for the award-winning documentary Art & Krimes by Krimes. This film tells how Jesse Krimes rebuilds his life as an artist and father while serving five years in federal prison. Making artwork using any available materials, including prison-issued soap, playing cards, and newspaper, Krimes constructs an impressive mural that is smuggled out piece by piece from his cell. Director Alysa Nahmias unfolds the way Krimes establishes his artistic career after prison, continuing to create beautiful works while struggling with the lingering effects of the carceral system. Students took part in an artist visit before the field trip, and post-film discussion of the ways that the film depicts inequitable sentencing, raising a child, and finding artistic inspiration. Thanks to Mr. Robinson, Mr. Silverman, and Mr. Doreian for chaperoning to the PFS and a sun-filled lunch in Rittenhouse Square.
